The mayor ignores also the recommendation of the Commissioner for the Protection of Equality!!!
As the public already knows, the movement Opre Roma Serbia has been actively monitoring the development of the situation regarding the accident that happened on March 12 in the Belgrade Roma settlement in Cukarica, where six children suffered severe injuries in the form of burns, and one child died as a result.
In addition to a series of letters, announcements, and a public call for responsibility, the representatives of the Movement also discussed this topic with the Commissioner for the Protection of Equality on March 19, 2021. On that occasion, we talked about the bad living conditions in this settlement and the fact that this accident is one of the most difficult, primarily because it concerns children who were seriously injured, and unfortunately one child passed away. We especially pointed out the problem of creating a wild landfill of construction materials in this informal settlement, which is reflected in the disposal of construction debris next to the transmission line, where the ground level came to an unsafe distance from the transmission line wires, which endangers anyone who passes there and the electric shock that caused the accident.
The Commissioner for the Protection of Equality pointed out that the equal exercise of the right to adequate living standards and adequate housing is guaranteed by numerous domestic regulations and international documents that promote and guarantee human and minority rights, and on March 24, 2021, after a meeting with our Movement, sent a Recommendation of measures for achieving equality to the City of Belgrade and that the City of Belgrade urgently takes measures within its competence to remove the illegal landfill of construction materials in the Roma settlement Cukarica and provide a safe living and housing conditions in this settlement housing solutions following international standards.
Going out on the field and talking to the residents of the settlement, we concluded that nothing has been done on this issue, which is quite strange considering that, according to the reports of the Commissioner for Protection of Equality, an average of 90% of bodies act on the recommendations of this institution.
Why does the mayor ignore the recommendation of the Commissioner for Equality?
Why does the mayor ignore the Roma community?
Why does the mayor ignore the lives of Roma children?
In a statement from May 6 this year, our Movement called on the mayor of Belgrade to explain to the Roma community in Serbia why it is so complicated for the city of Belgrade to solve this problem or to resign and leave the position of mayor to someone who will uncompromisingly advocate for the lives of citizens.
The Opre Roma Movement Serbia as a representative of the Roma community in Serbia stands strongly with our people and we are ready to do everything in our power so that this situation does not end in this and so that in the future we do not lose children's lives due to negligence or ignoring people who we have chosen the ones we pay to provide us with safe living conditions.
Justice for Nemanja!
